Religions and Traditions

The Seven, the Old Gods, the Lord of Light, the Drowned God: the beliefs of Westeros and Essos explained.

The Faith of the Seven

The main religion of southern Westeros: a single deity with seven faces (the Father, the Mother, the Maiden, the Warrior, the Smith, the Crone and the Stranger). Its septons and septs shape life at court.

The Old Gods

Worship of the First Men and the Children of the Forest, offered to the weirwood trees with carved faces. The Starks and the wildlings remain faithful to it.

The Lord of Light

A fire god from Essos, worshipped by red priests like Melisandre, who believe in an eternal war between light and darkness.

The Drowned God

Deity of the Iron Islands, revered by the Greyjoys. His faithful practice baptism by drowning, from which they return consecrated.

The Many-Faced God

God of death in Braavos, served by the Faceless Men. His motto, "Valar Morghulis", is a reminder that all men must die.

The Great Stallion

God of the Dothraki, represented by a gigantic horse. The khals are bound to him, and the nomadic peoples believe in him.

The Faith Militant

Armed movement of the Faith of the Seven, restored by Cersei Lannister. The Sparrows impose their own justice in King's Landing under the leadership of the High Sparrow.
