Era 1 · Before 1 AC
The Ancient Times
Before kings and dragons, Westeros belongs to the Children of the Forest and the First Men. The Andals, the Rhoynar and the Doom of Valyria set the stage for the Conquest.
The Children of the Forest and the First Men
The First Men cross the Arm of Dorne and cut down the sacred weirwood trees of the Children of the Forest. After centuries of war, the Pact of the Isle of Faces lets the two peoples live side by side.
The First Long Night
An endless winter falls upon the world and the White Walkers sweep down from the Far North. The Last Hero drives them back with the help of the Children of the Forest, who, according to the series, had created them to defend themselves.
The Building of the Wall
Brandon the Builder raises the Wall of ice, about 210 meters high and 480 kilometers long, to protect the realm. The Night's Watch has defended it ever since.
The Andal Invasion
Armed with iron and faithful to the Seven, the Andals cross the narrow sea and conquer nearly the whole south of the continent. The North, led by the Stark kings, resists them and keeps the old gods.
Nymeria and the Rhoynar in Dorne
Driven from her lands by Valyria, Princess Nymeria leads her Rhoynar ships to Dorne and marries Mors Martell. Dorne has kept its own distinct customs ever since, such as equal inheritance between daughters and sons.
The Targaryens settle on Dragonstone
Foreseeing catastrophe, Aenar Targaryen leaves Valyria with his family and his dragons for the island of Dragonstone. This decision will save his house.
The Doom of Valyria
About 114 years before the Conquest, a catastrophe destroys the all-powerful Valyria and its dragonlords. The Targaryens are one of the few families to survive.
Westeros before unification
The continent is divided into rival kingdoms: the North, the Vale, the Iron Islands, the Riverlands, the Westerlands, the Reach, the Stormlands and Dorne. Each has its own kings, wars and shifting alliances.
